In areas where bamboo is grown naturally and not at the expense of a hardwood forest, the environmental benefit is great. Around 30% more oxygen is produced over the same area as a forest. There are many soil benefits and it uses much less of an area to grow sufficient bamboo to make a building than a hardwood forest would require. Hardwood forests are disappearing rapidly, and we all need to try to halt that as much as we can. Bamboo products can be often be used instead of wood.

Bamboo: A Material for Landscape and Garden DesignBamboo: A Material for Landscape and Garden Design

Bamboo and its many varieties are becoming ever more popular as a design material for landscapes, squares, and gardens. With its widely varying hardiness, height, and leaf structure, the grass can be cultivated under many different conditions, and because of its special physical characteristics it can also be used as a material in related domains such as architecture, furniture design, and flower arrangement.

The extensive technical section of the book describes the properties and habitat requirements of the plant, the breeding of varieties, and the methods of propagation. It then goes on to explore its use and significance in urban and natural settings. Authors with technical expertise in the relevant fields, including the director of the Oprins bamboo tree nursery, and striking color illustrations convey exhaustive technical and botanical information and examples of the creative use of bamboo, especially in urban and natural settings.

Tropical BambooTropical Bamboo

When, in the dawn of the 19th century, Humboldt and Bonplant avidly toured the American surface, they included in their notes that the Quindio region in Colombia was practically covered with guadua trees. That is not surprising. The fertile, humid, well-drained soil in this zone is completely apt for these plants. Guadua wood is used for everything: landscaping, waterworks, columns, beams, gates, bridges, ladders, furniture, recipients. It's fast growth -up to 1.20m. in one day-and its uncommon flexibility make it an attractive material for this region's people's ingeniousness; they have deployed all of their creativity in using this tree. With more than 300 color photographs that depict the history and origin of the guadua bamboo, its natural production, and how it is used in housing construction and that of other spaces, this 176-page book is not only a well deserved elegy to the guadua but also a beautiful manner through which to make its sublime properties better known.

The World Market for Vegetable Materials Used Primarily for Plaiting Including Bamboo, Rattan, Reeds, Rushes, Oster, Raffia,
This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for cleaned or treated bird skins, feathers, and down including powder and wastes thereof. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for cleaned or treated bird skins, feathers, and down including powder and wastes thereof for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cleaned or treated bird skins, feathers, and down including powder and wastes thereof? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of cleaned or treated bird skins, feathers, and down including powder and wastes thereof vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of cleaned or treated bird skins, feathers, and down including powder and wastes thereof? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

Technological Dictionary of Plastics Materials
The 20th Century World has been transformed by the discovery and use of plastics. Today plastic materials are used in a wide variety of applications, from building and construction to packaging, from sports equipment to transportation. The vast number of plastics materials discovered over the past 40 years and their wide range of properties make them uniquely suited to a very broad spectrum of applications. This combination of the successful utilisation of the materials and the number of types of material available has led to the growth of an array of technical terms within the field. The Dictionary is intended as a reference tool for readers to negotiate these terms. The main part of the Technical Dictionary of Plastics Materials presents a comprehensive set of extended definitions of technical terms relating to all facts of the materials aspect of plastics technology. The definitions cover the nature of plastics materials, their composition (including relevent non-polymeric componants and additives, such as stabilisers, fillers, colourants, etc), their properties (including methods of property determination, testing, and evaluation), their applications, and their handling and behaviour in processing. In many cases reference is given to the relevant technical standards from the International (ISO), British (BSI), and American (ASTM) standards. In addition to the main part of the Dictionary containing the definitions there are two further sections. The first gives explanations of the abbreviated terms (letter symbols) used for the parent polymer and for the other constituents of plastics materials, while the second identifies the trade names of a number of plastics materials and their components.

Smart Materials and Technologies in Architecture
Today, architects and designers are beginning to look toward developments in new "smart" or "intelligent" materials and technologies for solutions to long-standing problems in building design. Unlike typical architectural material, whose fixed properties are at best a compromise within a complex building system, these new materials have properties that can be designed to be changeable in response to changes in the surrounding environment. Smart materials can be are color changing materials such as photochromics that change color when subjected to light and heat, light-emitting electroluminescents; shape changing polymeric gels and shape memory alloys. However, these new materials have so far been applied in a diverse but largely idiosyncratic nature, because relatively few architects have access to information about the types or properties of these new materials or technologies.
